We always need Construction Volunteers!

FAQ’s about Construction Volunteering

When can I volunteer on construction?
Our construction work site operates on most Saturdays from 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM.

Do I have to sign up ahead of time?
No, but we recommend you complete our Volunteer Register in advance. We want you to be able to volunteer when it suits your schedule but also match the needs of a particular work day.

Where do I go?
Contact our office @ 860-435-4747 or volunteer@habitatnwct.org to find out where and when we are building.

What is my commitment?
The commitment is up to you. Volunteer just once or as often as you wish.

What skills are required?
No specific skills are required, just a willingness to learn. An experienced crew leader is on the build site who will provide on-the-job training.

What do I need to bring?
If possible each volunteer should bring: work gloves, safety glasses, dust mask, hammer, nail apron, tape measure, and pencil. If you have other basic tools you may bring them as well. Please label all of your tools with your name or initials. Bring your own lunch and water.

What should I wear?
Wear sturdy shoes and suitable clothing.

Is there a minimum age requirement?
You must be at least 16 years old to work on a construction site. 16 and 17-year olds must have a parent or guardian sign a Minor’s Release of Liability and bring this form to the job site. Those between the ages of 16 and 18 can do general construction but cannot do excavation, demolition, use power tools or work at heights above 6 feet. They can do general carpentry.

What if I need to do community service?
Community service volunteers (including school, court and lawyer-recommended) are welcome and should contact our office @ 860-435-4747 or habitatoffice@habitatnwct.org.

Will I need to sign a Release of Liability?
Each Habitat volunteer must sign a Release of Liability form agreeing to take personal responsibility for any accidents or injuries on the job. Most individuals have a personal health insurance plan that covers them while engaged in volunteer work. However, you should verify your coverage prior to coming to the work site.

What if I have a group who wants to volunteer?
Arrangements for groups to volunteer are always welcome. Call our office to schedule, 860-435-4747.
